CHAPTER 16

An Awkward Breakfast

Evie

Breakfast was a stilted affair until Captain Browne arrived to break the tension.

Joseph was quiet, focused on his meal and pretending to ignore the glares he was receiving from her, Elijah, and Josie. Adam had shown up for breakfast for the first time in days, appearing rather haggard. His false joviality as he glanced at Evie throughout the meal would have probably caught everyone’s attention if they were not so focused on Joseph.

At the head of the table, Uncle Oliver sat with Miss Rutherford and Priscilla on either side of him, the three of them exchanging looks of confusion as they tried to figure out what had happened the night before. Miss Rutherford and Priscilla were probably especially confused. To their knowledge, Joseph had been at his club, Evie had been at a masquerade with Captain Browne, and Elijah and Josie at another gathering, so they were probably wondering how Joseph had made everyone so angry during a short carriage ride.

While Uncle Oliver knew they had all been together, nothing they had reported to him explained why everyone was angry at Joseph. They’d given him that much loyalty, though he did not deserve it.

Poor Priscilla also seemed confused but gratified by the sudden, aggressive friendliness Josie exhibited. Not that Josie had been unfriendly before, but she was clearly dealing with her anger at Joseph by being extra supportive of Priscilla, who was completely in the dark why she might have garnered such support.

That was what Captain Browne walked into.

“Good morning,” he said in his deep voice. There were dark circles under his eyes, indicating that he had slept little.

Evie narrowed her eyes at him, studying him closely. He had disappeared when the rest of them had gotten in the carriage to go home last night. Had he gone back to his own place, the way she assumed, or had he gone elsewhere?

She was suddenly gripped by the suspicion of the latter. The bastard. He had not said a word!

Various greetings were muttered from around the table.

“Did you need to speak with me?” Uncle Oliver asked with a slight hint of desperation. Likely, he badly wanted to get away from what was the most awkward family meal they’d ever had.

“Ah, yes, but I can wait until you’re fin—”

“I’m finished,” Uncle Oliver cut Captain Browne off. Getting to his feet, he waved his hand at Miss Rutherford, who moved to help him. “I am fine.”

Evie watched closely, but it appeared he truly was fine and regaining some of his strength, and she was sure it was due to Miss Rutherford’s influence. With Evie not able to watch him all the time, she had been worried he would overexert himself, but Miss Rutherford had proven capable of keeping him under control.

“I will come with you, Uncle Oliver,” she said, getting to her feet and shooting Joseph a significant look. “Perhaps Joseph will find he has something to say in our absence.”

“I will come as well,” Elijah said. “Josie?”

“I will stay here.
